Every month, hundreds of women are turned away from shelters due to lack of space. Hundreds of unwanted pets, if not adopted, will eventually be euthanized. On October 12 and 13, 2013, a photo shoot took place featuring local female business owners and their dogs. Titled Gimme Shelter, the proceeds of this calendar will go to Interval House, a local women’s shelter, and The Ladybird Animal Sanctuary, a local animal shelter.
There are so many young, successful female business owners in Hamilton and I thought it would be fun to highlight them with their dogs. The women in the calendar represent a variety of local businesses, including the Mulberry Café and Homegrown Hamilton, Siva Yoga, Roxy Dog Training and Pretty in Pink Studio. Hamilton’s female musician of the year 2012, Terra Lightfoot, also posed.
Local boutique owners of Blackbird Studios, Dakota Mae and White Elephant, and Needlework sewing studio, provided dresses and also posed. Local hair and makeup stylists offered their services for the charity, plus a number of designated dog handlers helped out.
Photographer Jennifer and her assistant Drew also donated their talents.
The project was also a family affair, as my grandmother hosted the shoot, my sister collected the bios and my mother produced the art work. The calendar was generously printed by Copydog at a reduced rate.
It’s my sincere hope that this large group of volunteers will always fondly remember a crisp fall weekend that was filled with lots of primping, laughing and barking – and which resulted in some truly stunning photos for this calendar. Thank you for supporting these worthy causes by buying this 2014 calendar.
