 ARTIST OF THE MONTH

CAROLYN TAYLOR- STAINGLASS

My love of stained glass began in 1972 on a driving vacation with my Mother out West.  My Uncle owned a piece of property with an abandoned home.  This house had a fantastic, but damaged, stained glass window.  The three of us managed to get it out and we brought it back from Saskatoon in the back of our Pinto.  This window sat for a couple of years and when I got married my husband Larry adapted that poor old window into a focal point in our apartment.  A small piece of that window still remains in our home 40 years later.

I studied stained glass as a general interest course and after two years the Instructor asked if I would take over the classes.  I  was thrilled to have this opportunity and taught at Hill Park, Westdale and Cardinal Newman  for 10 years.  Through the years I have designed and produced many custom windows.  With the great help of my husband (I couldn’t do these big ones without him) , we have made Chapel windows for St. Peters Hospitals (both Maplewood and Chedoke sites) and the Jurvinsky Hospital.  Now that Larry is retired we have been able to take on some large restoration work.  Our most recent restoration took 400 hours and involved 960 pieces of beveled glass for Their & Curran Architects on James St. North, home of the Art Gallery Annex and the CBC.  We are currently restoring the stained glass windows at the Dundas District School.  Vandalism took its toll on the windows above the Boys and Girls doors and much work is required to bring them back to their original beauty.  I enjoy all aspects of my stained glass career and I hope you will enjoy my work as well.
